EQUITY POLICY STATEMENT Bridgwater Netball Club is committed to ensuring that equality is incorporated across all aspects of its development. In doing so, it acknowledges and adopts the following definition of sports equality:
|
HISTORY OF BRIDGWATER NETBALL CLUB
The club was formed around 1950 when Mrs. Irene Tester, a local youth organiser, spotted a group of girls from the local Life Brigade playing basketball against the boys from the Boy’s Brigade. She suggested that they form a netball team and the Red Triangles were born. They evolved into the Bridgwater Netball Club and started to play teams from Frome, Taunton and Weston-super-Mare.
Amazingly, in 1954, the touring Australian national side was persuaded by the same youth organiser to stay in Bridgwater for a week and during that time they played against Bridgwater and Somerset. There is no record of the score but founder member and Club President Doreen Hodge, who played in both matches, remembers the local sides suffering heavy defeats!
In 1972, having expanded to two teams, the club amalgamated with a team at the YMCA to become the Bridgwater YMCA Netball Club. Over the years the number of teams grew to six and the club enjoyed a long period of success with Jupiter dominating the Somerset Premier Division in the 1980’s
Following several different venues and club names over the years, the Club has now returned to its roots and is once again called Bridgwater Netball Club. Approximately 10 years ago the Club sought better playing facilities for its members and as a result moved to Haygrove School. This move proved very successful, as the Club has built very strong links with the school.
The Club has a very popular junior section, which has increased the Club size to 14 teams (5 senior and 9 junior). This success is largely due to the dedicated committee members who strive to continually develop the Club further. As a result of their efforts, the Club has achieved the Silver CAPS Award from England Netball.
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
As President of Bridgwater Netball Club I am very proud to write this foreword.
I have always held the club in great admiration. Although I am the only original member still involved with the club, I have watched many members become excellent players and more importantly loyal and hard working committee members. The success and smooth running of this club is a tribute to all their hard work. We also have a very successful junior club.
This club has made a great contribution to my life. I have made wonderful friends, and travelled all over Somerset and England through my association with Bridgwater Netball Club, which started in a very small way by the efforts of Mrs. Irene Tester. She inspired and organised a small group to form a netball team, which went on to become the Bridgwater League, and then the Somerset Netball League. Enthusiasts all over Somerset now enjoy netball.
This club has a very proud heritage in Somerset, as netball started with our club. My congratulations go to the committee and all our members. My sincere and best wishes for all the seasons yet to come.
Doreen Hodge, Club President
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
As the new Chair of Bridgwater Netball Club, I face many challenges and exciting opportunities in the forthcoming season. With so many new, old and returning faces keen to play in Bridgwater colours, we find ourselves entering a fifth team in the Somerset Netball League. As a Club, we are well aware that the continued development of our juniors will secure the future and success of our senior teams.
We start the season with high hopes for the Knock-Out Cup Plate Winners, Jupiter, and newly promoted Saturn to contest at the top of the Premier Division in the Somerset League. Neptune’s promotion to the First Division will provide the opportunity for inspirational performances from our talented young players, who should benefit from the support of our more experienced senior club members. Venus and Mars will provide the opportunity for junior players to be supported and mentored during their transition to senior netball.
The forthcoming season also sees the start of a new coaching structure for both juniors and seniors, along with a newly qualified Level 2 coach in the position of Senior Club Coach. I am confident that her expertise, ideas, vision and discipline will enhance the performance of all players who commit to training.
Due to the continued support of our sponsors and the fantastic efforts made by the whole club in its fundraising earlier this year, the club will start the 2009/2010 season with new match and training balls, improved after-match facilities, new kit for 5 of the 9 junior teams and a club banner.
I would like to wish everyone a successful and enjoyable 2009/10 season.
Cath Clark, Club Chair
